A Purser’s Guide to the Caribbean — Part 2: St. Lucia

Second up in our favourite Caribbean destinations series, we dive into one of our go-to islands for standout scenery, memorable guest experiences, and anchorages that feel truly special.

St. Lucia is the kind of island that grabs you the moment you arrive, from the Pitons rising out of the sea, rainforest spilling down the hillsides, to anchorages that feel hidden within the landscape. It’s a place where every tender ride, trail and viewpoint delivers something memorable, making it one of the Caribbean’s most rewarding stops for guest experiences.

Things to Note

For guest arrivals and departures, Vieux Fort is a solid option. Although commercial and not the prettiest of docks, it’s close to the FBO, making pickups and drop-offs smooth and straightforward. An alternative is driving from the airport up to the Pitons anchorage, however this is long, often slow, and the roads can be rough – best avoided for tight turnarounds.

Anchoring near the Pitons is possible on both sides and delivers extraordinary views. Feasibility depends on vessel size and conditions on the day, so it’s something to plan rather than decide on arrival.

St. Lucia heats up quickly, and outdoor activities can be demanding — early starts are essential for hikes or anything involving elevation.

Our Top Picks

Jade Mountain boasts a stunning and exclusive lunch spot with exceptional views. It helps to know someone for access, but it’s special dining experience for guests.

Tet Paul Nature Trail is a scenic, intermediate 45-minute walk with some of the best Piton views on the island. Excellent for guests seeking breathtaking scenery without committing to a full-day hike.

Gros Piton Hike is challenging but a must-do activity. It’s a steep climb that requires a certified guide and an early start is non-negotiable to avoid the heat. Tough but deeply rewarding for active, adventure-minded guests.

Project Chocolat: Bean to Bar experience for a fun, hands-on activity where guests learn about cacao and make their own chocolate. Great for families or culinary enthusiasts.

Rabot, Hotel Chocolat pairs beautiful views of Gros Piton with creative, cacao-inspired dishes. Ideal for a relaxed, high-quality meal ashore, open for lunch and dinner.

Sugar Beach offers a stunning private beach area beneath the Pitons. Crystal water, excellent service – ideal if you can secure a reservation.

Cabot Resort is St. Lucia’s newest standout golf offering, set along dramatic cliffside terrain with sweeping ocean views. A premium experience for golf-loving guests.

PS Summary

St. Lucia is one of those islands where everything looks close on the map, but timing really matters. The Pitons dominate the skyline, weather shifts around them in moments, and the island’s terrain adds a sense of adventure to even the simplest outing. What you get in return are iconic views, standout hikes, exceptional dining and anchorages that feel truly unique to this part of the Caribbean. It’s an island that consistently delivers experiences guests remember long after they’ve left.
